Frequently Asked Questions About Reverse Osmosis Systems
Reverse Osmosis is named because man has reversed nature’s process. R.O. forces raw tap water, which is the denser liquid, against a membrane by utilizing the city’s water pressure. When forced against the highly polished surface of the membrane, the water molecules dissolve in the thin membrane layer and diffuse through it molecule by molecule, forming pure water on the product side of the membrane and in the process leaving 95% – 99% of the contaminants behind.
“As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity [sewage].
Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife; inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals… pesticides and herbicides… organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production… and radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.”
6 things – How often the filters need to be changed, the gallons per day the unit will make, how long the membrane will last, waste water to pure water ratio, the storage tank capacity and warranty.
- Depending on the quality of the filters will determine how long they last. For example 3 months, 6 months or a year. We only use one year filters.
- The gallons per day will determine how fast it makes water. For example, our 50 gallons per day unit makes water at the rate of 1 gallon in less than 30 minutes.
- The membrane is the heart of the unit and takes out the most contaminants. The higher the quality of the membrane will determine how long it last. Our membranes are rated for 4 years under normal water pressure & use.
- Waste water to pure water ratio depends on the membrane quality. For example, our units use 3 gallons of tap water to make one gallon of purified water. If you used 4 gallons of purified water a day then 8 gallons of contaminants would go down the drain. This would increase the water/ sewer bill about .50 cents per month.
- The storage tank capacity will determine how much purified water you can use at one given time. Our units come standard with a 3.2 gallon storage tank.
- Warranty. Our reverse osmosis unit comes with a 3 year warranty and a 1 year warranty on the tank & faucet. The warranty part would be free but the customer would be responsible for the service call.
The same as Dasani water by Coca-Cola and/or Nestle’s Pure Life. Both of these waters are reverse osmosis water with minerals added for taste.
Our manufacturer is Farris Enterprises in Riverside, California. Our water treatment equipment is custom built specifically for Ohio Valley Pure Water. Why, because what works best in other parts of the country doesn’t work best here. Also because our water treatment equipment is not mass produced like our competitors this allows us to have full control of each USA/ Canada made components that make up our water treatment system. Our water treatment systems are built to last for years without all the bells & whistles. Each water treatment system comes with a manufacturer serial number for servicing & warranty purposes.
3 Things:
- Water Pressure – Maintaining water pressure around 60psi at all times
- Annual Maintenance – not neglecting annual maintenance and not attempting to do it yourself
- NOTE: Majority of leaks we go on are from customers doing their own service and not doing it correctly or neglecting service all together
- Water Alarms – Water alarms don’t prevent leaks but they prevent damage or minimize damage by immediately alerting you when there is a leak. It makes a loud chirping sound when water is detected. A must have for any home.
- The system must be maintained with manufacturer-approved replacement parts from Ohio Valley Pure Water. Save all receipts for verification.
- Failures resulting from fire, freezing, neglect, self-service, accident, alteration, abuse, or acts of nature are not covered.
- Customers must have a working water pressure regulator not to exceed 75psi.
- The system must be maintained by Ohio Valley Pure Water only. Save all receipts for verification.
- Incoming water chlorine must not exceed .5 mg/L.
- Chloramines must not be present at all.
